When I was growing up, I always enjoyed going to my Nana's house in Pleasantville, NJ during the summer. Besides, swimming in the backyard pool, going to Atlantic City to walk the boardwalk, hanging laundry on the clothesline or visiting my Aunt Cynthia to play Scrabble, I enjoyed helping my Nana in her garden. She only grew tomatoes and her garden was the size of a traveling trunk. After we picked many ripe tomatoes, we would make homemade spaghetti sauce and have tomato & mayo sandwiches. I have very fond memories of my Nana's gardens.
I have my own summer garden, but it's situated in my kitchen window. I am growing sweet basil, which I have used in salads, crock-pot chicken, in white cheese sandwiches and goulash. Sweet basil has a very distinct smell than regular basil. It has a bite to it that gives food a nice sharp taste. This was a great $2.87 investment from Home Depot. I can't wait to use my sweet basil in the soups I will be making during the Fall through Winter. I do wish I could grow tomatoes like my Nana; however, I am allergic to tomatoes and can only enjoy them very sparingly. I dedicate my summer herb garden to my Nana, Pauline Cornelius. Spending the summers with her was always a highlight of my summer vacations.
